When I share room photos featuring rugs, one of the most common questions I receive is, “What size rug is that?”

I understand the importance of having a starting point for reference, but it’s unlikely that the dimensions of a room in one house will perfectly match those of your home. Rug size matters, especially when it comes to creating a balanced and visually appealing space. To assist you in selecting the right rug size for your bedroom I’ve put together a rug size guide for the bedroom.

In the bedroom, bigger isn’t always better when it comes to rug size. Despite having a king-size bed, sometimes I’ve found that a 9×12 area rug works well in most bedrooms, like in the image of our bedroom above. However, in one instance, the rug looked more like wall-to-wall carpeting, covering nearly every inch of the floor. So we downsized to an 8×10 rug, which was more suitable for the room and even made the space feel larger.

• Maintain at least a 10″ gap between the rug and the nightstands.

• The rug should extend at least 18″ beyond the sides of the bed.

• Depending on the room’s size, keep the rug at least 12″ away from the walls.
